After catching a defense contractor making illegal donations, the FBI’s anti-corruption squad wanted to open a bribery probe that involved Susan Collins. Then Trump’s FBI dismantled the squad.

    A shell company with a typo in its name.

    Navatek CEO Martin Kao sent $150,000 to a pro-Collins super PAC through the “Society of Young Women Scientist and Engineers.”

    The ask, at a Corner Bakery.

    At a November 2019 meeting in Washington, the super PAC’s chairman asked Kao’s team for a $500,000 donation.

    What Kao said she promised.

    Two months later, Kao told his executives Collins had committed to getting Navatek $32 million in naval contracts.

    Straw donors.

    Kao funneled about $33,000 to Collins’s campaign through relatives, which is illegal. Her campaign says it didn’t know and gave the money up in 2021.

    He’s in prison. He says they were bribes.

    Kao pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 87 months. He told the FBI that the lawmakers and lobbyists understood the donations were bribes.

    Then the investigation disappeared.

    FBI agents wanted to open a broader bribery probe. After Trump returned, FBI Director Kash Patel purged the anti-corruption unit, and the investigation died.
